The Northgate High School girls volleyball Junior Varsity team is proving that success is often born out of adaptation. This season has brought about a significant shift for the JV Broncos, but the team has met the challenge with determination and new talent.
The team recently experienced the bittersweet development of seeing two of their key players, setter Connie Cali and hitter Nora Hayes, elevated to the Varsity squad. While this is a proud moment for the program—a testament to the high-level talent being developed on the junior teams—it left the JV roster with immediate gaps in setting and hitting.
New Leadership and Rising Talent
Filling a setter’s shoes, in particular, can be a major hurdle, but the team quickly found a talented replacement. Stepping up from the Freshman team, Ava Campanelli has taken on the crucial role of setter. Ava has embraced the challenge, demonstrating poise and skill as she works to distribute the ball and run the offense for the JV Broncos.
Veteran leadership has also been key during this transition. Team captain and fellow setter Aries Ng has been a consistent force, showing a formidable serving streak. Aries has logged multiple serving aces during the past several games, providing a major boost to the team's scoring efforts.
Meanwhile, the back row has been anchored by the outstanding play of freshman Libero Isabella Victa. Isabella has been maintaining an impressive 2.12 Serve Receive rating throughout the DAL season, demonstrating remarkable consistency in handling the opponent's toughest serves and keeping the Broncos in system.
The strength isn't limited to the backcourt. Up front, the blocking trio of Lily Bradburn, Sidney Pirtle, and Chloe Tighe has been solid. Their consistent pressure at the net is forcing opponents to adjust their attacks, often resorting to softer shots like tips and roll shots rather than aggressive swings. This defensive dominance is a significant advantage for the Broncos.
Focusing on Growth
The transition is never easy, as the team works to find new rhythm and chemistry in both the setting and hitting rotations. However, the early games of the season are showing a resilient and hard-working JV team that is quickly learning to play to its new strengths.
Every rotation and every point is an opportunity to grow, and the Broncos are focused on developing their new lineup. It’s an exciting time to watch this team mature, as they continue to compete and develop the skills that will inevitably contribute to the long-term success of the entire Northgate volleyball program.
Be sure to come out and support the JV Broncos as they continue their season—and keep an eye on players like Ava Campanelli, Aries Ng, Isabella Victa, Lily Bradburn, Sidney Pirtle, and Chloe Tighe who are rising to the occasion and keeping the competitive spirit of the team alive! Go Broncos!
